Way up north in the Cuchumatanes mountains lies the Ixil Triangle, a trifecta of pueblos that is home to the indigenous Ixil community and a variety of astounding textile traditions.

San Juan Cotzal is one of those pueblos, and has long been famed for the fine weavings the women of the community create. These Guatemalan shawls are also known as tzutes, which are an all-purpose textile used for everything from carrying goods to acting as a baby sling or simply for an extra layer of warmth against the mountain cold.

They're finely woven of luxurious cotton, which gives them a beautiful, almost silk-like sheen, and the ends are beautifully hand-knotted in a variety of patterns. Worn as a scarf or a wrap, they're surprisingly warm for a cotton textile, thanks to the quality and tightness of the weaving - these are definitely not like the openwork Guatemalan scarves you see elsewhere. They also make beautiful table runners.

Available in bright, medium and dark red.
